CAN YOU SUPPORT CARL AND HELP CREATE CHANGE?
On Saturday 21 June, at 10am, Carl will start a 6 hour walk around the oval at Springfield Lakes State School. Carl will have a tag team supporting him, comprised of his friends and family. Anyone is welcome to join in and walk beside Carl. Carl hopes to help create change and build awareness of a couple of issues that are close to him! Carl has a degenerative, hereditary eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa.
WHAT IS RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA?

(Original extract taken from wikipedia.org)
Retinitis pigmentosa, or RP, is a group of genetic eye conditions. In the progression of symptoms for RP, night blindness generally precedes tunnel vision by years or even decades. Many people with RP do not become legally blind until their 40s or 50s and retain some sight all their life. Others go completely blind from RP, in some cases as early as childhood. Progression of RP is different in each case.

RP is a group of inherited disorders in which abnormalities of the photoreceptors (rods and cones) or the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of the retina lead to progressive visual loss. Affected individuals first experience defective dark adaptation or nyctalopia (night blindness), followed by constriction of the peripheral visual field and, eventually, loss of central vision late in the course of the disease.

HOW COMMON IS THE DISEASE?

Usually people present with the early stages of this condition are diagnosed much later on in their adult life. Carl was diagnosed at just 3 years of age. Carl is now 11. The condition causes slow decreased vision; night blindness and tunnel vision as the retinas functioning decreases. It often results in blindness. Carl's vision continues to deteriorate and currently he has limited peripheral vision. Carl is a member of Retina Qld, and now requires extra planning and assistance that will be beneficial in his future growth and development.

CAN IT BE TREATED? IS THERE A CURE?

No. Sadly, ther is no cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa. Carl believes that it is only a disability…if one allows it to be!

Carl hopes to:
