How to organise your Garage Sale

Do you frequent garage sales? Do you enjoy hunting out a bargain? Have you ever considered having a garage sale yourself? If you've answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then Anthony Frangi from 936 Drive has some advice you may find useful. Since the recent boom in property in Hobart garage sales have also been on the increase. Last weekend Anthony noticed at least six garage sales in his suburb alone.

Sally Rofe is author of 'Have a Garage Sale' and told Anthony that she is pleased people are recycling their unwanted goods.

"Having a garage sale is great fun, it just needs a little bit of organisation and a little bit of thought, it's not scary," Sally assured Anthony.

One thing to consider before you begin organising your garage sale is the issue of home security. "Have some thought about where the sale is set up," suggested Sally, adding that once you've opened your gate, your house should be locked up and fully secure.Your garage sale should be set up before the big day, with all items priced and everything ready to go.

"I think advertising is really important," Sally told Anthony." You've got to get people to the sale...I really feel it's better to put your sale in local advertising, papers...ring up the local papers, get prices," Sally said.

In the past Sally has organised street sales where a number of households join together to create an almost festival feel in the street. Sally told Anthony that although she was at first a little sceptical about the project, in the end it worked out to be highly beneficial for everyone involved. "The more people having a sale in your area or your street then people think it's worth the trip and will bother to come," Sally told Anthony.

When it comes to money, Sally advised that a decent float is highly important as it's inevitable someone will offer you a fifty dollar note for an item worth 20cents.

"Make your sale really obvious" Sally said, suggesting balloons out the front of your house will encourage people to enter your property.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when having a garage sale is undervaluing their items. Sally suggested it's wise to visit a few second hand shops prior to the day to get an idea of how much things are worth.
